Wine Style of the Month: Sparkling

The pop of the cork, the rise of tiny bubbles and the gentle whoosh of foam in the glass—nothing makes an occasion more festive than Sparkling Wine. But Sparkling wines are not just for holidays and celebrations, they make a fine choice for everyday meals and pair exceptionally well with a variety of foods. From fried chicken to lobster bisque, the range of food pairings is endless. My favorite pairing is kettle style potato chips.

 

Amista Sparkling Rosé of Syrah Morningstar Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley, NV

Made using the Méthode Champenoise (traditional) process, the Amista Sparkling Rosé of Syrah is a lovely way to bubble! In the glass it’s a light cranberry pink color with a fine delicate bubble stream. On the palate it’s both creamy and tart with flavors of dried cranberry, lemon zest, vanilla, toasty brioche and a touch of ginger. The long dry finish is fresh and lively.

CAST 2020 Brut Rosé, Dry Creek Valley

The CAST 2020 Sparkling Brut Rosé of Zinfandel is a veritable trip to Bubble Nirvana—it’s pure bliss. It shines in the glass with a light pink and rose-gold color as bubbles rush to the top in long strands.  On the palate it’s both zesty and rich with soft notes of strawberries and cream, raspberry mousse and an undercurrent of citrus zest. Great complexity of flavor with balanced acidity and subtle hints of ginger, white peach and orange blossom on the long dry finish.

The Dutcher Crossing Posterity Reserve Blanc de Blanc from Dry Creek Valley is made from 100% Estate Chardonnay grapes. It sparkles with a light golden color and a fine bead of bubbles. The palate opens with a delicate creamy mousse and a bit of chalk, then segues to bright flavors of yellow apple, pear, quince candied ginger and lemon zest. It’s vibrant and alive with zesty flavor on the long satisfying finish.

Kokomo 2019 Sparkling Blanc de Blanc, Peter’s Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley

The Kokomo 2019 Sparkling Blanc de Blanc, from Peter’s Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley presents in the glass with a pretty pale straw color and a profusion of racy bubbles. On the nose, it has a light toasty brioche note and citrus zest. On the palate it’s lean and elegant with a steely precision and notes of tart apple, lemon, chamomile flowers, grapefruit, and slate. The dry finish brings lime zest, quince and ginger in to the forefront. It’s a crisp and satisfying sipper from beginning to end.

Trentadue California Champagne XXXII

The Trentadue California Champagne is made with French Colombard grapes from the Mendocino and Lodi regions, using the Charmat process. On the nose it has a wonderful peaches and cream scent. On the palate it has tart green apple, balanced with deep notes of toasted almonds, marzipan and chamomile. The fine crisp finish is both tart and sweet with a zesty note of ginger spice, orange zest and sweet white cherry. It’s an incredible value and sips well beyond it’s price point.

Varietal of the Month: Pinot Noir

 

Pinot Noir is light bodied with moderate to high acidity and alcohol levels between 12-15% that makes it eminently pair worthy with a wide range of foods. A cool climate grape, Pinot Noir can be finicky and difficult to grow, but it is also expressive and reflective of the place where it’s grown. Here in Sonoma County, in the Russian River Valley and along the Sonoma Coast, we have some of world’s best vineyards and growing conditions for producing classic Pinot Noir of elegance and complexity.

ACTA 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

The ACTA 2021 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley is a blend from two Russian River Valley vineyards. Acta Non Verba means Deeds not Words, the producer’s commitment to doing everything with intention. And this first vintage of Pinot Noir was a revelation! It’s a dance of spice and red fruits with balanced tannins and great acidity On the nose, dark cherry, raspberry and pomegranate with a core of baking spice, vanilla, and a whiff of dried tobacco leaf. On the palate it’s bright and light, yet savory with notes of allspice, cranberry, and fleshy dark cherry. Full of texture and well balanced, it has long smooth finish with a hint of black plum and trace of clove.

Mill Creek 2020 Pinot Noir Swensrud Vineyard, Sonoma County

 

The Mill Creek 2020 Pinot Noir, Swensrud Vineyard, is truly satisfying. On the nose, a medley of dried strawberry, raspberry, clove, vanilla and earthy notes of mushroom and tobacco leaf. On the palate, a nice balance of fruit, acid and tannin with flavors of tart cherry, hibiscus, rose hips, anise, and a deep grounding note of ripe red plum. It’s balanced and elegant with a long earthy and spicy finish.

Orsi Family 2021 Pinot Noir Eastside Road Vineyard, Russian River Valley

 

The Orsi Family 2021 Pinot Noir, Eastside Road Vineyard, Russian River Valley is pale ruby in the glass with a slight blue tinge. On the nose hibiscus, spicy carnation, blueberry and cranberry. On the palate a carnival of delight both savory and bright with notes dried strawberry, spun sugar, blood orange and tart cherry. It’s like a tone poem, a veritable ode to Pinot Noir.

Papapietro Perry 2021 Pinot Noir, Nunes Vineyard, Russian River Valley

 

The Papapietro Perry 2021 Pinot Noir, Nunes Vineyard has all the earmarks of a classic Russian River Valley Pinot. The aromatic nose is composed of dusty rose petal, candied violet, vanilla, raspberry, black cherry and a dash of white pepper. It has great texture with initial notes of plum sauce, wild blueberry, blood orange, raspberry. The mid palate delivers earthy flavors of mushroom, sweet tobacco and baking spice. A long smooth finish is balanced with deep notes of blackberry, cranberry and spicy clove. Age worthy and will develop further complexity over time, but simply delicious right now as well.

Sonoma-Cutrer 2021 Pinot Noir, Les Plus Haut, Russian River Valley

 

The Sonoma-Cutrer 2021 Pinot Noir, Les Plus Haut has a hypnotic deep purple-blue hue in the glass. The soft aromatic nose has an array of notes including rose water, blueberry, black cherry, strawberry, leather, clove, vanilla, cigar and plum. It’s a heady rush to the olfactory senses. On the palate, a balanced and well-integrated interplay of acid and tannins deliver tart layered flavors of cherry, red raspberry, wild blueberry, smoky fig, rhubarb and a dusting of cocoa. Each sip brings a new facet to savor.

The Viszlay Vineyards 2019 Pinot Noir is like a sleeping beauty that awakens upon the first sip. On the palate, it’s well balanced with medium acidity, smooth tannins and a delicate purple heart of dark fruits with plum, blackberry, wild blueberry, and fleshy black cherry. The long spicy finish has a wonderful savory note of thyme at the end.

Varietal of the Month: Cabernet Franc


 

If Missy Elliot liked Cabernet Franc, maybe the lyrics to “Get Ur Freak On!” would have been “Get Ur Franc On!” But even without a staring role in a song, Cabernet Franc is having a moment, an ongoing moment that is. And it’s no surprise. Cabernet Franc is a great food friendly wine with medium body, moderate tannin and modest acidity. With great finesse and texture, it’s the softer side of Cabernet Sauvignon, to which Cab Franc is the parent grape.

Amphora 2019 Cabernet Franc, Dry Creek Valley

 

The Amphora 2019 Cabernet Franc from Dry Creek Valley is deep purple in the glass. On the nose, scents of dark plum and dried strawberry; dusty and earthy with notes of sage and black pepper. On the palate it’s juicy and smooth with flavors of mocha, raspberry and blackberry with a light minty finish. Tannins are soft and easy, like a favorite flannel shirt. Pair with a classic comfort food dish like lasagna.

The Meeker Vineyard 2020 Cabernet Franc, Dry Creek Valley

 

The Meeker Vineyard 2020 Cabernet Franc, Dry Creek Valley is a deep, dark burgundy color in the glass. On the nose, it’s bright and showy with aromas of raspberry, dried strawberry, vanilla and plum. As it opens, lively scents of mint and sage come into play. It’s lighter in weight and mouthfeel than one might be expect given the ABV, but it’s a juicy delight with sunny acidity and taut tannins that support flavors of tart cherry, chili pepper and crushed rose petals.

The Mounts 2021 Cabernet Franc, Dry Creek Valley is full of verve and energy with aromas of cherry, dried strawberry, vanilla, chaparral (sage and cedar) and mocha. Soft and lovely on the palate, it has both lift and depth with rich flavors of sweet tobacco, Aztec Chocolate, red plum, strawberry. Wonderful structure that will develop with age, but it’s simply delightful now.

The Pedroncelli 2021 Cabernet Franc is a small lot wine, hand harvested from the sustainably farmed East Side vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. On the nose, licorice dried strawberry, raspberry jam and garrigue, a Mediterranean herb blend that includes rosemary, thyme, basil, sage, fennel, and mint. On the palate it’s plump with flavors of dark plum, dried strawberry, pink and black peppercorn, and licorice. Deep and savory with a bright spicy finish. A cozy wine for a cozy fireside evening.

The Rockpile Vineyard 2020 Cabernet Franc, Feather Ridge in Dry Creek Valley, is supple and alive with flavor. On the nose, a beguiling scent of dried strawberry, sweet tobacco, dusty gravel and a trace of bell pepper. On the palate, strawberry, chaparral, jalapeño, and red pepper flake. The fine smooth tannins carry notes of red currant and tart cherry through to a bright finish.

The Robert Young 2021 Cabernet Franc, Alexander Valley, is a gorgeous deep garnet color in the glass. On the nose, it’s aromatic with scents of raspberry, strawberry, sweet briar, cocoa, and a faint note of fennel. On the palate, it opens with juicy blackberry, followed by notes of paprika, thyme, vanilla and mocha on the long finish. Lovely overall structure with medium acidity and soft knitted tannins make this an excellent choice for savory meat or pasta dishes.

Varietal of the Month: Barbera

 


Barbera, a variety native to Italy, can vary in flavor depending on where it’s grown; be it warm or cool climate, and how it is produced. Wines from cool climes tend to display brighter tart red fruits and warmer climes show deeper berry fruit flavors. Typically Barbera is delightfully spicy with good acidity, and tends toward medium to light tannins with a smooth finish. FUN FACT: A little know rumor claims the name of the character played by John Travolta on the 70’s TV show Welcome Back Kotter, was chosen by one of the writers as a subtle nod to his favorite Italian grape— Vitis vinfiera Barbera —Vinnie Barbarino.

Carol Shelton 2022 Barbera D’ Oakley, Planchon Vineyard, Contra Costa County

 

The Carol Shelton 2022 Barbera D’ Oakley is blended with Zinfandel and Merlot.

It has a soft aromatic nose of cherry, cocoa and strawberry. On the palate it’s smooth and silky with medium tannins and good acidity that supports flavors of tart pomegranate, black cherry and blackberry. Secondary notes of dried strawberry, licorice and black pepper come through on the long spicy finish. Pair with Eggplant Parmigianino. NOTE: I had the pleasure of tasting this vintage previously and it has deepened with evolved. It’s always fun and educational to taste a particular vintage over several years if you can.

Foppiano Vineyards 2022 Cook House Barbera, Russian River Valley

 

The Foppiano Vineyards 2022 Cook House Barbera, from Russian River Valley is a deep ruby color with a magnificent nose of mocha, rose petals, violet, and plum.

On the palate notes of strawberry, boysenberry, mocha, tart cherry and a pleasing note of minty graphite, much like garrigue. Great balance and structure with light grip of tannins and long spicy-herbal-menthol-cherry finish that is quite delicious and satisfying. Pair with pear and gorgonzola pizza.

The Orsi Family 2022 Barbera, Dry Creek Valley is deep garnet in the glass. On the nose, light scent of pomegranate, anise, and cherry. On the palate the flavors are tart and juicy with notes of dried strawberry, blackberry, cranberry, tart cherry and fleshy dark plum. It has all the earmarks of classic Italian style Barbera with great acidity and loads of licorice, black plum, strawberry, cherry, and an earthy note of tobacco. The initial taut tannins mellow with time in glass. Pair with aged salami and goat cheese crostini.

The Peterson 2020 Barbera is from the Tollini Vineyard in Mendocino. This Barbera has an impish heart and soul that will charm your palate and capture your imagination. On the nose, fleshy black cherry, plum, and garrigue (think mint and thyme). On the palate, it builds steadily with flavors of dried strawberry, sour cherry, cranberry, and black pepper. With time in the glass it comes alive with a juicy vibrancy that carries though to the bright spicy finish. Pair with a creamy mushroom risotto and go heavy on the Parmesan.

The Russian River Vineyards 2021 Barbera from Sonoma Mountain, Moring Sun Vineyard is deep garnet in the glass. On the nose, aromas of cocoa dust, blackberry, cherry and a delightful hint of bright strawberry. On the palate the flavors are tart and juicy with notes of dried strawberry, blackberry, cranberry, tart cherry and fleshy dark plum. Bright acidity and medium sandy tannins deliver a mouthful of deep lip-smacking flavor. Rich, balanced, and tremendously nuanced with long juicy finish. Pair with deep fried green olives and blue cheese.

Tart and bright with vibrant acidity it’s bursting with flavors of black and red cherry, plum, licorice, leather and black pepper. The tannins transpose from a light grip to long and silky with a juicy and spicy finish. Enjoy with pumpkin sage ravioli.

Varietal of the Month: Syrah


 

Is Syrah the Red Wine Supernova? Very possibly, yes! Yet for many years Syrah, a medium bodied to full-bodied dry red Rhône varietal, was ignored by consumers and it struggled to find a place at the table. Today, winemakers embrace the inherent wild nature of the grape and coax it to its full natural expression of flavors from bright to savory, making wines of great structure and complexity with a balance of fruit, tannin, acidity and alcohol. Syrah is a many splendored thing, a poem of scents, flavors and textures; it’s a varietal worthy of your attention.

Alexander Valley Vineyards 2019 Syrah, Alexander Valley

 

The Alexander Valley Vineyards 2019 Syrah presents as a dark violet color in the glass. Although this wine’s roots are Californian, from the Alexander Valley, it has the pulse and heartbeat of the Rhône. On the nose it’s deep and earthy with notes of menthol and herbs de Provence, green peppercorn, black cherry and sweet tobacco. On the palate, bright acidity and juiciness prevails with notes of blackberry and raspberry. A touch of white pepper and a meaty quality, typical of Rhône Syrah, balance the fine tannins along with a lingering black olive note on the finish. The sub $30 list price is an exceptional value.

Balletto 2019 Syrah BCD Vineyard Russian River Valley

 

The Balletto 2019 Syrah from the BCD Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is 100% Syrah made from the Estrella River clone. So what’s that mean to you? Probably nothing. But once you taste it you’ll want to take note and seek it out again. On the nose, a rich earthy elixir of black plum, ripe blackberry, clove and black pepper with notes of coffee bean, dark chocolate and sassafras. On the palate, the lively blackberry comes to the fore, along with rich flavors of blueberry and black cherry. Fine sandy tannins build to a long satisfying finish with notes of mocha and a hint of black olive. Enjoyable right now, but it is destined to deepen and develop with age.

J. Rickards Winery 2020 Syrah Furlong Vineyard, Alexander Valley

 

The J. Rickards Winery 2020 Syrah from the Furlong Vineyard in Alexander Valley is co-fermented with 4% Viognier. On the nose, plum sauce, black current, and black pepper, along with subtle notes of cedar, menthol and sweet tobacco that conjured in my mind an adorable hamster smoking a Salem. (But that’s just my frame of reference.) Rich and robust, this is a fleshy and richly flavored Syrah with flavors of plum, blackberry, mocha, mint, and chaparral. Wonderful balance and structure with fine sandy tannins that lift the deep flavors and deliver a nice round finish.

Peterson 2016 Syrah Gravity Flow Block Dry Creek Valley

 

The Peterson 2016 Syrah Gravity Flow Block from the Dry Creek Valley is composed of 93% Syrah that is co-fermented with 7% Viognier. Co-fermenting Viognier with Syrah is time-honored method employed in the Rhône Valley to offer stability to the wine, but it also subtly enhances the floral and fruit notes. On the nose an exciting collision of earthy blackberry, dark plum and brambles, along with savory scents of mushroom, cardamom and sassafras. On the palate, a soft caress of minty sagebrush, ripe black cherry, mocha and boysenberry. This bold scent profile coupled with a plush mouthfeel is the essence of the descriptor— “an iron fist in a velvet glove”—it’s robust yet elegant and refined at the same time.

The Selby 2019 Syrah from Dry Creek Valley is alive with texture and flavor, with all the earmarks of a fine savory Syrah. On the nose, chocolate covered blueberries with a touch of mint and green peppercorn. On the palate, smooth and rich with bright juicy blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, cranberry and plum sauce. It’s harmonious and balanced, with medium body and a distinct and savory black olive note on the long velvety finish.

The Spicy Vines 2021 Syrah Dragon’s Kiss is from Le Mulet Rouge, a high elevation vineyard in the Sierra Foothills. The nose is softly perfumed with chocolate, sweet tobacco, clove, a whiff of leather and peppercorn. On the palate it’s chewy and tart with plum sauce, mocha, boysenberry and tangy black olive. Soft powdery tannins spread across the tongue and palate with a plumy rich meatiness and a touch of mint on the long earthy finish.

Varietal of the Month: Zinfandel

 


Zinfandel is know as the All American grape and has been grown in California since the 1800’s. Yet the grapes true roots are in Croatia where it’s known as Tribidrag. In Italy Zinfandel is called Primitivo. Although the majority of California producers label their wine as Zinfandel, you may see a few Tribidrag’s and Primitiov’s too. Zinfandel is a medium-bodied dry red wine with a range of dark fruit flavors that include raspberry, blueberry, red and black cherry, and plum. Notes of tobacco, brambles, hickory and spice are common as well. Medium tannins make it a versatile food pairing wine, with flavors ranging from juicy and jammy, to lean and elegant depending on climate.

The Carol Shelton 2019 Rockpile Reserve Zinfandel from the Florence vineyard in Dry Creek Valley is composed of 80% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 5% Carignane. On the nose, a confluence of heady scents with blackberry and plum along with notes of rooibos tea, sweet tobacco and crushed gravel. On the palate bright flavors of sour cherry, raspberry and Santa Rosa plum with secondary notes of dried strawberry and sweet tobacco. An impressive barrel program yields great structure and balance with fine sandy tannins on the long lush finish that echoes with dried strawberry and juicy raspberry.

The Ehret 2022 Zinfandel from Knights Valley is a deep dark garnet in color. On the nose, light scents of dried strawberry and sweet tobacco. On the palate—KPOW Batman! This Zin packs a mighty punch of dark fruit flavors with blackberry, black plum, and ripe Bing cherry. Secondary notes of vanilla, mocha, raspberry, and a touch of white pepper are framed by a generous jammy body. Long finish with silky tannins and note of white pepper. Pair with barbecue chili cheese dogs or beef ribs cooked low and slow.

The J. Rickards Winery 2020 Old Vine Zinfandel from the 1908 Brignole Vineyard in Alexander Valley is a field blend of 80% Zinfandel, 10% Petite Sirah, 5% Carignane, 4% Mataro and a 1% Alicante Bouschet, Muscat Canelli and Golden Chasselas; all picked and fermented together. It has a bright and fresh nose with black berry and black cherry, and a peppery note of spicy carnation. Generous body with initial notes of blueberry and spearmint is balanced with deep lush flavors of blackberry and mocha. Lovely finish with long spicy tannins.

The Meeker Vineyard 2022 Mazzoni Home Ranch Zinfandel Alexander Valley

The Meeker 2022 Mazzoni Home Ranch Zinfandel from Alexander Valley is made from the oldest block in the vineyard with vines over 100 years old. While essentially a field blend, Zinfandel is the primary grape, small amounts of Sirah, Carignane, Golden Chasselas, and others that give balance and lift to the wine. On the nose, notes of strawberry, Bing cherry, blueberry and spicy carnation. On the palate, full bodied flavors of red and black currant, and secondary notes of leather, mocha and plum. The spicy finish is a clarion call to deliciousness that rings long and clear to the end with notes of strawberry, rhubarb and sweet briar. Pair with spicy pulled pork sliders.

Pedroncelli 2021 Bushnell Vineyard Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley

The Pedroncelli 2021 Zinfandel from the 22-acre Bushnell Vineyard, which has been in the Pedroncelli family for 80 years, is history in a glass. It’s a full-fledged beauty with scents of blackberry, mocha, strawberry preserves and a pleasant whiff of fruitcake on the nose. On the palate, it’s a harmony of blackberry, raspberry, earthy brambles, rhubarb, and a note of Dr. Pepper. It’s elegant and balanced with fine-grained tannins and a rich long finish. Grenache is a wonderful and versatile varietal all on it’s own, but its claim to fame is its use as one of the fundamental grapes in the highly regarded French Rhone blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache is a medium bodied red wine with moderate acidity, and bright red fruit and strawberry flavors. The tannin structure can range from light and smooth to more pronounced depending on the climate in which it is grown.

Although in truth Merlot never left the scene, it’s just been waiting for it’s moment to shine again and that moment is now.

On the palate notes of sweet briar, fig and vanilla, which builds to a minty crescendo with smooth integrated tannins. It’s like an adult version of a Peppermint Patty! The 2019 Longboard Savage Côast Syrah from Russian River Valley is dark magenta in the glass. On the nose a characteristic rotundone note—the aromatic peppery quality of peppercorns, marjoram and oregano found in Rhône grown Syrah. Additional scents of blueberry, cassis, violet, black cherry, leather and gravel give it a grounded earthy heft. On the palate a soft mouthful with sassafras (aka root beer) black olive, cranberry, sweet tobacco, clove, espresso and a cured meat note. The spicy finish is long and taut with balanced supportive tannins. Pair with Grilled Sausages and Peppers.

Fresh and fruity it has great complexity, texture and flavor. On the palate notes of sage, chocolate, herbal cherry and blackberry compote with a zingy hit of black olive. Peterson 2016 Syrah,Gravity Flow Block, Sonoma County

The Peterson 2016 Syrah, Gravity Flow Block has serenity and a tension that makes me think of the moment just before the conductor drops the baton and the music begins. That suspended moment of anticipation is mirrored here in the way the flavors build coalesce into a singular harmony. Medium garnet in color it has a lovely potpourri nose of violet, sage, spicy black carnation, blueberries and plum with a minty-chocolate-anise note. On the palate, a plush mouthfeel with blueberry, sweet tobacco, chocolate mint, leather, graphite and black pepper. The fine tannins carry the complexity of black fruit flavors through to the end with a trace of black olive on the finish. Pair with classical music and Chateaubriand.
