Varietal of the Month: Barbera

 

Barbera, a variety native to Italy, can vary in flavor depending on where it’s grown; be it warm or cool climate, and how it is produced. Wines from cool climes tend to display brighter tart red fruits and warmer climes show deeper berry fruit flavors. Typically Barbera is delightfully spicy with good acidity, and tends toward medium to light tannins with a smooth finish. FUN FACT: A little know rumor claims the name of the character played by John Travolta on the 70’s TV show Welcome Back Kotter, was chosen by one of the writers as a subtle nod to his favorite Italian grape— Vitis vinfiera Barbera —Vinnie Barbarino.

Carol Shelton 2022 Barbera D’ Oakley, Planchon Vineyard, Contra Costa County

 

The Carol Shelton 2022 Barbera D’ Oakley is blended with Zinfandel and Merlot.

It has a soft aromatic nose of cherry, cocoa and strawberry. On the palate it’s smooth and silky with medium tannins and good acidity that supports flavors of tart pomegranate, black cherry and blackberry. Secondary notes of dried strawberry, licorice and black pepper come through on the long spicy finish. Pair with Eggplant Parmigianino. NOTE: I had the pleasure of tasting this vintage previously and it has deepened with evolved. It’s always fun and educational to taste a particular vintage over several years if you can.

Foppiano Vineyards 2022 Cook House Barbera, Russian River Valley

 

The Foppiano Vineyards 2022 Cook House Barbera, from Russian River Valley is a deep ruby color with a magnificent nose of mocha, rose petals, violet, and plum.

On the palate notes of strawberry, boysenberry, mocha, tart cherry and a pleasing note of minty graphite, much like garrigue. Great balance and structure with light grip of tannins and long spicy-herbal-menthol-cherry finish that is quite delicious and satisfying. Pair with pear and gorgonzola pizza.

The Orsi Family 2022 Barbera, Dry Creek Valley is deep garnet in the glass. On the nose, light scent of pomegranate, anise, and cherry. On the palate the flavors are tart and juicy with notes of dried strawberry, blackberry, cranberry, tart cherry and fleshy dark plum. It has all the earmarks of classic Italian style Barbera with great acidity and loads of licorice, black plum, strawberry, cherry, and an earthy note of tobacco. The initial taut tannins mellow with time in glass. Pair with aged salami and goat cheese crostini.

Peterson 2020 Barbera Tollini Vineyard, Mendocino

 

The Peterson 2020 Barbera is from the Tollini Vineyard in Mendocino. This Barbera has an impish heart and soul that will charm your palate and capture your imagination. On the nose, fleshy black cherry, plum, and garrigue (think mint and thyme). On the palate, it builds steadily with flavors of dried strawberry, sour cherry, cranberry, and black pepper. With time in the glass it comes alive with a juicy vibrancy that carries though to the bright spicy finish. Pair with a creamy mushroom risotto and go heavy on the Parmesan.

The Russian River Vineyards 2021 Barbera from Sonoma Mountain, Moring Sun Vineyard is deep garnet in the glass. On the nose, aromas of cocoa dust, blackberry, cherry and a delightful hint of bright strawberry. On the palate the flavors are tart and juicy with notes of dried strawberry, blackberry, cranberry, tart cherry and fleshy dark plum. Bright acidity and medium sandy tannins deliver a mouthful of deep lip-smacking flavor. Rich, balanced, and tremendously nuanced with long juicy finish. Pair with deep fried green olives and blue cheese.

The Seghesio Family Vineyards 2021 Barbera is from the Home Ranch Vineyard in Alexander Valley. The nose is an intriguing bouquet of mocha, dusty blackberry, nutmeg and earthy tobacco. Tart and bright with vibrant acidity it’s bursting with flavors of black and red cherry, plum, licorice, leather and black pepper. The tannins transpose from a light grip to long and silky with a juicy and spicy finish. Enjoy with pumpkin sage ravioli.

Varietal of the Month: Zinfandel

 

Zinfandel is know as the All American grape and has been grown in California since the 1800’s. Yet the grapes true roots are in Croatia where it’s known as Tribidrag. In Italy Zinfandel is called Primitivo. Although the majority of California producers label their wine as Zinfandel, you may see a few Tribidrag’s and Primitiov’s too. Zinfandel is a medium-bodied dry red wine with a range of dark fruit flavors that include raspberry, blueberry, red and black cherry, and plum. Notes of tobacco, brambles, hickory and spice are common as well. Medium tannins make it a versatile food pairing wine, with flavors ranging from juicy and jammy, to lean and elegant depending on climate.

The Carol Shelton 2019 Rockpile Reserve Zinfandel from the Florence vineyard in Dry Creek Valley is composed of 80% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 5% Carignane. On the nose, a confluence of heady scents with blackberry and plum along with notes of rooibos tea, sweet tobacco and crushed gravel. On the palate bright flavors of sour cherry, raspberry and Santa Rosa plum with secondary notes of dried strawberry and sweet tobacco. An impressive barrel program yields great structure and balance with fine sandy tannins on the long lush finish that echoes with dried strawberry and juicy raspberry.

The Ehret 2022 Zinfandel from Knights Valley is a deep dark garnet in color. On the nose, light scents of dried strawberry and sweet tobacco. On the palate—KPOW Batman! The J. Rickards Winery 2020 Old Vine Zinfandel from the 1908 Brignole Vineyard in Alexander Valley is a field blend of 80% Zinfandel, 10% Petite Sirah, 5% Carignane, 4% Mataro and a 1% Alicante Bouschet, Muscat Canelli and Golden Chasselas; all picked and fermented together. It has a bright and fresh nose with black berry and black cherry, and a peppery note of spicy carnation. Generous body with initial notes of blueberry and spearmint is balanced with deep lush flavors of blackberry and mocha. Lovely finish with long spicy tannins.

The Meeker Vineyard 2022 Mazzoni Home Ranch Zinfandel Alexander Valley

The Meeker 2022 Mazzoni Home Ranch Zinfandel from Alexander Valley is made from the oldest block in the vineyard with vines over 100 years old. While essentially a field blend, Zinfandel is the primary grape, small amounts of Sirah, Carignane, Golden Chasselas, and others that give balance and lift to the wine. On the nose, notes of strawberry, Bing cherry, blueberry and spicy carnation. On the palate, full bodied flavors of red and black currant, and secondary notes of leather, mocha and plum. The spicy finish is a clarion call to deliciousness that rings long and clear to the end with notes of strawberry, rhubarb and sweet briar. Pair with spicy pulled pork sliders.

The Pedroncelli 2021 Zinfandel from the 22-acre Bushnell Vineyard, which has been in the Pedroncelli family for 80 years, is history in a glass. It’s a full-fledged beauty with scents of blackberry, mocha, strawberry preserves and a pleasant whiff of fruitcake on the nose. On the palate, it’s a harmony of blackberry, raspberry, earthy brambles, rhubarb, and a note of Dr. Pepper. It’s elegant and balanced with fine-grained tannins and a rich long finish. If Taylor Swift drank this she might be compelled to write: “Karma a Zin from the Pedroncelli peeps!”

The Taddei Wines 2021 Zinfandel Sratification, Dry Creek Valley is aptly named. It is indeed stratified with layers of flavor and texture. On the nose, bright floral notes of candied violets and hibiscus, with fruity scents of blackberry and plum. On the palate concentrated flavors of mocha, black cherry, and boysenberry with a dash of hickory wood. Great texture and body. Taut long tannins balance the rich red and black berry fruits with notes of leather and sweet briar. Pair with a hearty lasagna.

Varietal of the Month: Viognier

 

Viognier, originally from the Northern Rhone Valley in France, is a full-bodied white wine with a rich, unctuous texture. Intensely aromatic, Viognier has good acidity, tannin structure, and relatively high alcohol. Viognier from cool climates tend towards bright citrus notes, while warm climate wines exhibit deeper floral notes and ripe stone fruit flavors. Pronounced [Vee-ohn-yay]

Robert Young Viognier 2021 Alexander Valley

 

The Robert Young 2021 Viognier from Alexander Valley is complex and compelling with an ultra soft nose and equally soft palate— it’s like a whisper from the vines to your senses. Varietal of the Month: Barbera

The Colagrossi 2019 Barbera from Moon Mountain in Sonoma County has all the earmarks of a classic. Dark ruby color with a magnificent nose of mocha, rose petals, anise, and blackberry. On the palate, a plush mouthfeel with blackberry, dark cherry, fig, plum and sweet tobacco. Fresh acidity and textbook Barbera structure carry the dark fruit flavors smoothly forward with a spicy pepper and clove spiked finish. From first sniff to last sip it’s a pleasure. On the palate, a tangy juicy punch of flavor full of pomegranate and black cherry with a grounding notes of thyme and peppercorn. The blend of Zinfandel and Merlot give this Barbera a fine balance with a bright yet plush mouthfeel and notes of Santa Rosa along with black pepper and blackberry on the long spicy finish. Wild Woodland creature indeed! Right on the label the Peterson Winery 2019 Barbera from Tollini Vineyard declares the wine possesses the spirit of a “wild woodland creature”—indeed the simile is apt. With it’s dark color and bright flavor it’s a wily but approachable Barbera. On the nose, deep earthy notes of garrigue, licorice, ripe blackberry, and mocha. On the palate, notes of tangy tart cherry with a medley of thyme, marjoram, and blackberry brambles. A plush mouth feel with soft tannins that deliver secondary flavors of fig and plum, boysenberry and slate. Balanced and beautiful. Pair with Rabbit Ragu over Pappardelle.

Notes of tobacco, brambles, and spice are common as well. Medium tannins make Zinfandel a versatile food pairing wine for a wide range of dishes from pizza to barbecue.

Acorn Heritage Vines 2019 Zinfandel, Alegría Vineyards, Russian River Valley

The Acorn Heritage Vines 2019 Zinfandel from the Russian River Valley is a field blend of 78% Zinfandel along with 11% Alicante Bouschet and 9% Petite Sirah. I implore you to get a bottle and see the 16 other varieties that make up the remaining 2% —it’s astounding and it’s also what makes Acorn field blends so enigmatic and pleasurable.  On the nose, notes of mocha, blackberry tea, Santa Rosa plum and garrigue—which are herbaceous shrubs found in the Mediterranean. On the palate, multiple layers of flavor come into play. Soft medium tannins support notes of salty licorice, blackberry and plum that offer both juiciness and depth with a bright spicy finish.

Taut tannins build to a long satisfying finish with lively acidity and spicy earthy notes of thyme and cedar.

The DeLoach Vineyards 2019 Zinfandel from Wild Creek in Dry Creek Valley checks all the boxes for a classic Zinfandel. On the nose, chocolate covered raspberries interspersed with notes of white pepper, butterscotch and sweet tobacco. It’s both earthy and bright. On the palate juicy acidity with notes of plum sauce, ripe strawberry, and peach preserves. Multi layered finish with deep flavors of sweet briar and blueberry pie ride upon soft plush tannins with notes of black pepper, cinnamon and sweet tobacco.

The Dry Creek Vineyard 2019 Zinfandel, from the Farmhouse Vineyard, almost brought a tear to my eye in gratitude and appreciation. It’s a marvel of balance between fruit, tannin and acidity. On the nose, bright strawberry, all-spice, black cherry, blueberry and a seductive meaty note that was thoroughly enticing. On the palate a harmonic convergence of peach preserves, strawberry and an herbal sage note that gives it depth and continuity. It’s buoyant, balanced and complex with hints of white pepper and dark chocolate on the long fine finish.

Dutcher Crossing 2019 Zinfandel Bacigalupi Vineyard 

 

The 2019 Dutcher Crossing Zinfandel from Bacigalupi Vineyard, is bursting with the vitality and verve that I’ve come to associate with Bacigalupi fruit. Upon opening, the nose has faint earthy notes of sweet briar and brambles along with dusty gravel and saddle leather. As it evolves in the glass, scents of strawberry waft up along with a warm tendril of vanilla and mocha. On the palate, a plush body with flavors of black cherry, blueberry and blackberry and a hint of clove. The soft tannins deliver a spicy finish with grounding notes of dark plum and soft sage. It’s sleek and smooth and savory.

The Ehret 2021 Zinfandel form Knights Valley is a beguiling beauty. On the nose, a clean scent of fresh picked strawberry, and a delightful mix of vanilla, butterscotch, peach and fleshy bing cherry. On the palate there’s a savory meaty note along with rich voluptuous flavors of blueberry and boysenberry. The long soft finish has hints of licorice and sage. Great balance of tannins and acidity make this a sure thing for a variety of pairings. But nothing beats a classic pairing like some low and slow smoked maple barbecue ribs.

Three cheers for field-blends and old vines! The J. Rickards Winery 2019 Old Vine Zinfandel from the 1908 Brignole Vineyard in Alexander Valley is another great example of how even tiny quantities of a varietal can add to the overall shape, tone and texture of a wine. Add to the mix the immeasurable value of gnarly old vines, and you have all the makings of a mythic wine. The grapes in the blend are 80% Zinfandel, 10% Petite Sirah, 5% Carignane, 4% Mataro and a 1% Alicante Boushet, Muscat Canelli and Golden Chasselas. On the nose, notes of strawberry, red cherry, blueberry and spicy carnation. Full bodied with flavors of red and black currant, and secondary notes of mocha and vanilla. The spicy finish rings long and clear to the end with notes of strawberry and rhubarb.

The Kelley & Young 2017 Zinfandel from the Robert Young Vineyard in Alexander Valley is comprised of 96% Zinfandel and 4% Peitie Sirah. It’s multi-faceted with a rich fruit and balanced tannins. On the nose, scents of chocolate covered blueberries and raspberries with a spot of black licorice and black pepper. On the palate it’s opulent and sultry with notes of blueberry, butterscotch, and spiced peaches. The vibrant finish sallies forward with of notes of tart cherry, sage and blackberry. It’s a meaty meal of a wine that would pair beautifully with a roasted leg of lamb.

Limerick Lane 2021 Zinfandel Russian River Valley

 

The Limerick Lane 2021 Zinfandel from Russian River Valley is both feisty and profound. And you gotta love a wine that quotes Aristotle right on the label — “In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.” This wine is marvelous indeed, with a perfumed nose of hibiscus, blackberry, cedar incense, sweet tobacco, boysenberry and wet gravel. Notes of chalk and dusty cocoa are present as well. On the palate, punchy flavors of tart cranberry, thyme, blackberry, and red plum. Fine balance of acid and tannin bring a fruity freshness and vitality to this varietal with a minty snap of spice on the long lingering finish.

The Tadddei Wines 2021 Zinfandel from the Ioonnatti Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley is a wine of grace and structure. The nose is a potpourri of strawberry, raspberry, clove and a subtle touch of nutmeg and sweet tobacco. On the palate, soft tannins with an abundance of red and black fruits and plump chocolate covered raisins, aka Raisinets—an old-school theater favorite. It’s rich and supple with a fresh minty-herbal note on the finish. Pair with good friends and deep conversation.

Woodenhead 2019 Zinfandel 1925/1939 Old Vine, Alexander Valley 

 

The Woodenhead 2019 Zinfandel, from Alexander Valley is another fine example of a dazzling field-blend with great depth and nuance. The wine is one-of-a-kind, the product of a confluence of circumstances that led the winemaker to acquire the old vine grapes before the vineyard was sold to a new owner. On the nose, ripe boysenberry and black plum with a touch of sweet briar, sage and rooibos tea. The palate is full with flavors of just picked strawberry, blueberry, rhubarb and grounding notes of mocha and nutmeg. The long taut finish recalls the herbal qualities first detected on the nose and rounds out with a gingery note of cardamom. Unfined and unfiltered it’s an honest expression of the varietal with no pretense. The “just right” tannins leave you thirsting for the next sip.

Viognier is a full-bodied white wine originally from the Northern Rhone Valley in France. Viognier differs depending on the climate be it cool or warm. Cool climate wines tend towards bright citrus notes, while warm climate wines exhibit deeper floral notes and ripe stone fruit flavors. Carol Shelton’s 2021 Wild Thing Viognier from Placer County mirrors its striking label of a vine in bloom with a wine of great zest and vitality. On the nose notes of citrus, rose water, honeysuckle, white peach and honeydew melon fill the glass. On the palate bright and tangy flavors of pineapple, tangerine, melon and a grounding note of crushed gravel that ties it all together. The Trattore 2020 Estate Viognier from Dry Creek Valley was fermented half in barrel and half in tank, which gives it both bright and plush elements. On the nose scents of orange blossom, peach, nectarine and a clean fresh note of beeswax. On the palate, great viscosity and weight with beeswax and creamy mango, followed by a light note of ginger and almond on the finish. Balanced and rich, pair try pairing with creamy polenta and 5 Spice roast chicken.

Amphora 2015 Barbera Clarksburg, Heringer Vineyard

 

The 2015 Amphora Barbera from Clarksburg AVA in Amador County is dark and savory with a fresh floral nose of violets, and spicy note of fennel bulb. On the palate a dance of licorice, black fruits and blueberry jam, with a smooth plum finish. At first sip it reminded me of Cab Franc, but quickly opened into its full Barbera expression with bright acidity and medium tannins that deliver a mouthful of deep lip smacking flavor. Pair with Ragu alla bolgnese over egg noodles.

Colagrossi 2019 Barbera, Pauli Ranch, Mendocino

 

When I was a kid there was a commercial with the line “Mamma Mia, that’s one spicy meatball.” This 2019 Colagrossi Barbera, Pauli Ranch, Mendocino made me exclaim “Mamma Mia that’s one spicy Barbera!” From start to finish it exudes plucky acidity with good tannin structure and savory rich flavors that open with plum and licorice and then develop further to reveal notes of mocha, tobacco, blackberry and fruitcake—like a classic pannetone. It glides to a long spicy finish with a hint of juicy sour cherry. Pair with cheesy sausage and pepper pizza.

The Ramazzotti 2019 Barbera, from Dry Creek Valley, has an enchanting nose of vanilla and mocha reminiscent of the dust at the end of a box of Count Chocula cereal—soft and wonderful! On the palate it has all the earmarks of classic Italian style Barbera with great acidity and loads of licorice, black plum, strawberry, cherry, and an earthy note of tobacco. The Seghesio 2019 Barbera from Alexander Valley is pert and alive with an aromatic nose of cherry, lavender and strawberry. Harvested from the 130-year-old Planchon Vineyard, this 2021 Carole Shelton Barbera D’ Oakley is blended along with vineyard mates, Zinfandel and Merlot. The nose is a soft bouquet of mocha, dusty blackberry, nutmeg and earthy tobacco. Tart and bright with zingy acidity it’s flush with flavors of black and red cherry, plum, licorice, leather and black pepper. The tannins transform from grippy to silky with a long spicy finish. Enjoy with pumpkin sage ravioli.

Taddei Wines 2018 Barbera Pauli Ranch Mendocino

 

The Taddei Wines 2018 Barbera from Pauli Ranch, Mendocino has a nose comprised of licorice, black pepper, cherry, plum, blackberry pie and vanilla with a touch of clove that makes me think of Chowards’ Violet Scented Gum. On the palate notes of prune, plum, iris, mocha, violets, spicy carnation and a pleasing note of minty graphite, much like garrigue. Great overall balance and tannin structure with a light grip and long finish of spicy-herbal-menthol-cherry, (think Ricola) that is quite delicious and intriguing.

It grows in practically every wine region and is noted for it’s concentrated flavors and ability to age gracefully for decades.
