TASTE AWARDS
In early April Wine Road Podcast won the Taste Award for Best Podcast! Beth Costa and I went to Los Angeles for the award ceremony and it was memorable to say the least! When our name was called, I literally fell off my chair which was a tall bar stool and my feet did not touch the ground anyway-- so it was no exaggeration to say I was knocked off my feet!

Small is Beautiful - Sonoma Underground a Tasting Sized Right
If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that i’m quite choosy when it comes to events and I’m done with big walk around tastings. (No more Fort Mason!) Small and focused is where it’s at for me. A new tasting event -Sonoma Underground is a perfect example of Small is Beautiful.
Last month I attended the inaugural Sonoma Underground event, the brainchild of Laura Perret Fontana and Elizabeth Schneider, that is dedicated to the proposition that the small guys often get overlooked and lost in the crowded wine space. Fontana and Schneider’s criteria were producers making great wine fewer than 10,000 cases. (Although the majority pouring was well under that.) Oh and the other main criteria --“Nice people only! They couldn’t be a**holes.” I was told. Ah, yes! That always helps.
As I strolled around the room...ahem...squeezed around the room, I noticed (with few exceptions) the actual owners/wine makers were pouring. That’s the bonus of a small event—the chance to connect with the winemaker.
While I was well acquainted with the majority of the producers Inman, Acorn, Crux, Kieran Robinson Wines, Keller Estate, Larsen Projekt, Longboard, and Robert Young Estate whom I wrote about here for Sonoma Discoveries—there were several I’d never tried before.
One of which was the Keller Estate Brut Rosé Bubbles! Whoa! What a beauty. And the Keller Estate 2014 Precioso Chardonnay was one of the most lush, elegant and delicious examples of the grape I’ve experienced.
Kathleen Inman’s Whole Buncha Bubbles and Endless Crush Rosé of Pinot Noir were also causing a stir among attendees at her table along with her standout portfolio of Pinots.
Those unfamiliar with Larsen Projekt Rosé of Grenache should rectify that as soon as possible. The wine, a lovely intentional rosé, has a tart fruit melody and a baseline of minerality that is like a foxtrot across the palate. Fill your dance card with it soon!
My love at first sip white wine of the day was the 2015 Peterson Triple V White Blend Dry Creek Valley Estate consisting of Vermentino, Vernaccia, and Verdelho—a trio of varieties from the Mediterranean. The Peterson V3 was a revelation of flavor –an aromatic tone poem with great balance. Veni Vidi Vici—I came, I tasted, and my taste buds were conquered. Also very much enjoyed the Peterson Cabernet Sauvignon and GSM. Oh yeah, and the Syrah too.
Props to Laura Fontana and Laura Schneider digging deep to bring together small producers that are making great wine with integrity and spirit. It was a fun, engaged, and happening crowd (although I think I may have been the only one spitting). As the day wore on I noticed many people signing up for wine club memberships – always a great indicator of good wine.
If Sonoma Underground comes to your neck of the woods, here is some advice:
Buy the ticket. Take the ride.
Sonoma Underground is excellent for both the wine curious and the wine serious. Don’t miss it.

Head directly across the street to Flying Goat or A'Roma Roasters in Rail Road Square.
Or take a jaunt up a few blocks to Peet's on 4th Street.

Old-school French cuisine. You’ll like this place if you are over 60 and have an expense account. Located directly across the street from the Hyatt.
SEBASTOPOL
About 9 minutes due west of the Hyatt is Sebastopol where you will find the Barlow home of Crooked Goat Brewing and Wind Gap Wines tasting room, a must stop for the Trousseau Gris on tap.

Ramen Gaijin
Awesome and authentic ramen and Japanese influenced dishes with small plate Izakaya menu. Winner of 2017 Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand award.
HopMonk Tavern
Great selection of beer and hearty pub food with some lighter selections. Good place for getting loud with a group. Has an all weather/outdoor beer garden with fire pits and lounge style seating.
Handline
Upscale locally sourced seafood in fast casual setting. Order and pay at the counter and then find a seat kind of place. Great food and wine but don't be surprised if you walk out wondering how the heck you just spent $75 on two tacos a salad and a glass of wine. But nice if you have a group and don’t want to do the split-the-check-tango at the end of the meal.
Weather:
If you need weather updates use a weather app on your phone and be wary of people claiming to be “boots on the ground” when they are broadcasting from a bunker in an undisclosed location. ;-)

Huichica Sonoma - Food, Wine, Music and Craft Beer All in One
What are you doing this weekend? It’s not too late to make plans to attend the Huichica Sonoma Festival at Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma this Friday June 9th and Saturday 10th.
The festival, now in its eighth year, is a live music festival paired with regional culinary talent, Gundlach Bundschu wines and craft beer. The two-day event, founded by vintner Jeff Bundschu and musician Eric D. Johnson (of Fruit Bats) and curated by (((folkYEAH!))) Presents, will be held at the historic 159-year-old Gundlach Bundschu winery in Sonoma, is a family friendly event.
"Huichica is basically great music, great food and great wine with no bad attitudes,” said Bundschu. “We love it when the artists and purveyors themselves are great people – the kind you’d want to hang with.”
“I’m very proud of the way Huichica, going on eight years now, has grown to be one of the most unique boutique festival settings in both content and geography,” said Britt Govea, founder of (((folkYEAH!))) Presents. “These events are not centered around commerce – it’s about providing a fully curated, rural experience of timeless music and great wines mixed with truly wonderful food that we are blessed to share with the public twice a year.”
Friday day passes for the festival are $40, Saturday day passes are $65 and two-day passes are $95. Admission for kids under 12 is FREE!

Buena Vista Winery Re-dedication and the Wine Tool Museum

On May 30th, 2015 I had the pleasure to attend the re-dedication of the historic Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma and the debut of the Wine Tool Museum. The event had all the earmarks of a JCB production: Fabulous food and wine and along with a serious element of history and reverence for the place in history Buena Vista Winery holds. The day unfolded around a splendid garden party with actors in period costumes and can-can girls that brought the era back in focus with period music and performances.
The sense of the past was palpable, although I originally mistook Mark Twain for Colonel Sanders. But it was a hot day and I blame the heat waves for the identity snafu. I realized my mistake when I asked Mr. Clemens for his secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices and got a blank look in return. “Aren’t you colonel Sanders,” I asked?
“My dear, I am Mark Twain! Samuel Clemens if you will,” he replied.
Ack! My Bad. But it’s an easy mistake to make about a guy in a white suit and string tie.

The Wine Tool Museum
The Wine Tool Museum hosts one of the largest collection of original implements and machines along with an interactive sound, light and motion show that traces the history of the industry highlighting the tools and original devices that made large scale production of wine possible.
If you visit on a hot day, it’a welcome timeout from the heat, a cool refuge in which to sit and reflect. Afterwards you can taste a few of the current vintages.
Preserving History
The final renovations are now complete at Buena Vista and it’s well worth a visit for both history buffs and wine-lovers. It’s remarkable to consider the effort that was taken to restore the winery to its original visage. No expense was spared to address all the necessary structural issues and turn the property from sagging to sensational, and make the original building a living legacy to the history of wine. Cheers to JCB and his team for preserving a piece of California history and injecting it with new life and purpose.

West of West Wine Fest in Sebastopol -- August 1, 2, & 3
So many wine festivals and grand tastings and so little time. What's a winelover to do?
Actually, I’ve begun to shy away from the gigantic ballroom or warehouse (think Fort Mason) tastings with hundreds upon hundreds of wines. I prefer the smaller, focused tastings such as the 7% Sloution event I wrote about here.
But even better than events that are small and focused, are those that are local. And for me, it does not get anymore local than West of West Wine Festival. The Festival will be held at the Barlow, the new epicenter of Local Wine, Art, & Food in Sebastopol, which I can walk to from my house. {Three cheers for wine festivals within walking distance of your home!}
Now in its second year, the West of West Wine Festival showcases wines from West Sonoma Coast vintners, wineries, and growers. This year the Saturday Seminars will cover wine and food pairings in The Evolution of California Cuisine & Wine and an exploration of wines made from the vines of the Heintz Vineyards by top producers including Banshee & Zepaltas, DuMol, Flowers, Freeman, Littorai, Williams Selyem, Ceritas, Radio Coteau, and Kesner Wines.
The Grand Tasting featuring over 40 producers will be held on Saturday from 3-6pm and again on Sunday from 1-4pm.

Vive la France at DeLoach Vineyards -- JCB Comes to RRV
I’m drinking wine while a conga line dances to the beat of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean and snakes around large wood wine tanks embellished with disembodied legs and heads. All around me I see Libertines, silent sentries from the French Renaissance, their eyes glazed, mouths in half-pouts. It’s not a fever dream. It’s another night in the world of Jean-Charles Boisset.
Every time I get an invitation to a Jean-Charles Boisset event I know I’m going to enter a world of pure imagination dedicated to the proposition that wine wrapped around education and pleasure is the key to creating a memorable and satisfying experience.
Last week I attended an event to showcase the reinvention of DeLoach Vineyards in Sonoma. The property has been re-cast as homage to France, but with both feet firmly planted in the good earth of the Russian River Valley.
Now at DeLoach you can participate in a variety of experiences including a blending session to produce your own wine, a guided tasting of vineyard designates that highlight the particular soils of the local vineyards, or you can learn about the world of wine and mustard and even make your own batch on premise. The mustard experience is in partnership with Fallot Mustard of Burgundy France and includes a flight of DeLoach wine. There is also a very intersting new experience called the Taste of Terrior.
The Appellation Room
The vineyard designate tasting is held in The Appellation Room that features a gigantic relief map to help you pinpoint the exact place the vineyards are located and understand the influence of prevailing fog patterns. This is the kind of stuff I love, but even if you are not a geek about soils, I think its one of the most relaxing and comfortable places to just sit back and consider each wine at your own pace.

A companion to the Appellation Room is the Royal Barrel Cellar with an energetic vibe and the most electrifying lighting experience that makes it truly feel like Wonka-land. Here you can taste barrel samples and ponder the life force of wine fermenting all around you.
Theater of Nature
Wander around the manicured gardens and groomed grounds to The Theater of Nature, where you can take a self-guided interpretative walk thru biodynamic and organic practices. This experience is comparable to the one at Raymond Vineyards in Napa, but DeLoach has far better views. Yes, I’m biased, DeLoach is practically in my backyard and I’m partial to the Sonoma scenery.
Taste of Terrior
Just beyond the Theatre of Nature, past an old growth stand of redwoods, is the garden that produces the majority of produce used in all the dinners and events at DeLoach. The garden path wraps past a spotless barn area housing sheep and chickens and then leads up to one the most interesting new experiences – the Taste of Terrior.
At the Taste of Terrior guests can compare Boisset Family wines from famed regions of France side-by-side with locally produced Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The point is not to debate which is better, France or Sonoma, but instead to elevate the sense of place each presents and educate the palate all in one stop. It’s one of the only places to offer such a tasting in the entire country. I did not partake of the experience that night, but I am anxious to go back and check it out.
JCB Winery Lounge

Back in the Libertines Cellar, the music pumps, our wine glasses glisten, and the conga line grows longer as JCB admonishes us to raise our hands for yet another round of La lala! La lala! La. La. La! The scene is so deliriously euphoric it’s like a nerve gas of sheer joy has been pumped into the air.
The message is simple: Enjoy yourself, revel in the excess, give yourself over to the absolute pleasure of wine. It’s a command, an invitation, and in the world of JCB--a credo.
No matter where you visit; be it Raymond Vineyards in Napa, Buena Vista in Sonoma, or now at DeLoach, you will eventually be compelled to give in and release yourself to the wine, the place, and the absolute pleasure of experience— JCB won’t stand for anything less.
